What is the trading period on the GRA list of licensed operators?

Updated

The trading period is the licensing year that one edition of the regulator's list covers. The current table on gra.go.ke is headed Licensed Gaming Companies for the Trading Period 2025/26, last modified on 19 March 2026. A New line shows no renewal for that period, and online licences run one year under the 2026 Licensing Regulations.

What the heading says

The regulator publishes one table on its licensed operators page under the heading "Licensed Gaming Companies for the Trading Period 2025/26". The table has eight columns: No., Operators Name, Trading Name, BK, PG, PL, STATUS, DOMAINS. It does not define the words trading period, and it prints no issue or expiry dates.

Read 2025/26 as the licensing year the table covers. The page's own content record shows a last modification on 19 March 2026, so the rows reflect that date rather than the day you open the page.

Why it matters for New lines

The STATUS column holds two values: New on 17 rows and Renewal on 170 rows, out of 187 rows in total. New tells you the list does not record the operator's licence in this period as a renewal; the two values are compared in what New means in the status column. The trading period tells you which year that status belongs to.

Duration is the second reason the period matters. Regulation 22 of the Gambling Control (Licensing) Regulations, 2026 sends every licence to the Fourth Schedule, which gives online gambling one year for a new licence and one year for a renewal. Section 31(3) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 sets a default of thirty-six months unless regulations prescribe another period, and these Regulations do.

The list was last modified before those Regulations were gazetted and prints no issue date, so it does not show when a given New line falls due for renewal. Regulation 24(2) requires the renewal application at least ninety days before expiry, and if the Authority renews, a later edition of the list should carry the same operator with the status Renewal. The one-year term is explained in how long a new online betting licence lasts.

Example

Row 109 of the current table reads: Plenius Ventures Limited, trading name Toshabet, BK 0001305, PG Nil, PL Nil, status New, domains Nil. The period in the heading, 2025/26, is the only date attached to that line. The page does not say when this licence was issued or when it expires, so do not add a date the regulator has not printed.

What the trading period does not tell you

It is not an expiry date. Section 39(1)(d) of the Act requires the Authority's register of licences to record the date of expiry of each licence, but the public web table does not reproduce that field. What a New or a Renewal line changes for an account holder is covered in renewal versus new licence.

Questions and answers

Does the trading period 2025/26 mean every licence on the list expires in 2026?

No. The heading describes the year the list covers, not the expiry of each licence. Section 39(1)(d) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 requires the Authority's register to record each licence's expiry date, but the public table on gra.go.ke does not print one. Online licences run one year under the Fourth Schedule of the 2026 Licensing Regulations, counted from issue, and issue dates are not on the page either.

How often does the trading period on the list change?

The page does not say. The current edition is headed 2025/26 and its content record shows a last modification on 19 March 2026. The regulator may change rows within a period and may publish a new heading when a new licensing year begins. Treat the modification date as the date of the data, and open the page itself rather than a copy of it when you check a site.

Will a New line become a Renewal line in the next trading period?

Only if the licensee applies and the Authority renews. Regulation 24 of the Gambling Control (Licensing) Regulations, 2026 requires a renewal application at least ninety days before expiry and gives the Authority thirty days to issue a licence to a successful applicant. If no renewal is granted, the operator may be absent from a later list, and the register kept under section 39 of the Act would record the expiry.
